Sheryl Crow's Brain Tumor: Caused By Cellphone Usage?

Sheryl Crow is no stranger to battling health issues. She was by Lance Armstrong’s side while he battled with cancer, and she recently overcame her own battle, with breast cancer. And now a benign brain tumor was recently discovered and Crow believes that it was caused, in part, by her cellphone use.

Crow says that her first inkling that something was wrong was when she felt her brain go "mushy" and she was forgetting lyrics on stage, “I [was] worried I had an early [onset] Alzheimer's."

While the rock star acknowledges that medical professionals would be very hesitant to say that her tumor was caused by cellphone usage, but she still believes there was a causal relationship.

This case reinforces the fact that long term affects of cellphone use are still unknown; while there is no conclusive evidence of a direct correlation between tumors and cellphone usage, the WHO has recently stated that that there is a possible connection between the two.

"The evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification," Dr. Jonathan Samet, a scientist at the University of Southern California who chaired the working group, said in a statement.

The truth is we all use mobile phones on a daily basis; to imply that you would have to stop using one is just not realistic. What is most important is to be proactive and limit the amount of potentially harmful radiation that you may be exposed to.

At tawkon we like to focus on the "Precautionary Principles" as they apply to mobile usage. We have defined them as:

  1. Use cell phones that emit lower radiation (low SAR)
  2. Limit the duration and proximity of exposure to cell phone
  3. Use a headset, Bluetooth earpiece, or speakerphone
  4. Find alternatives to cell phone use, such as text messaging or using a landline
  5. Limit use of cell phone while it is searching for signal (cell phones emit higher levels of radiation at these times)
  6. Carry your cell phone at least an inch away from your body or regularly rotate it around the body
  7. Do not sleep next to your cell phone while it is on
  8. Avoid work areas that use wireless networks and wireless phones if possible
  9. Limit use of cell phone by young children

In the end, the jury is not out yet about the long term effects of radiation emitted from mobile phones, however the smartest and most responsible thing to do is to take a few precautionary measures to make sure you minimize any sort of exposure - by using the tawkon application, you can make sure you are being as cautious as possible while still enjoying the great benefits that your mobile phone offers.
